Qunut in the Witr Prayer

Question:

How could I perform the Qunut in the Witr Prayer? Is it before or after offering the ruku` (bowing)?

Answer:

Qunut literally means du`aa’ (supplication).

In the Shari`ah, it refers to the supplication made in the last rak`ah (unit of prayer) of the Witr Prayer whether before or after offering the bowing.

Al-Hasan ibn `Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught me some words that I say during the witr. (The version of Ibn Jawwas has: I say them in the supplication of the witr.) They were: “O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me security among those You havet granted security, take me into Your charge among those You have taken into Your charge, bless me in what You have given, guard me from the evil of what You have decreed, for You do decree, and nothing is decreed for You. He whom You befriends is not humbled. Blessed and Exalted are You, our Lord.” (An-Nasaa’i)

The etiquette of performing Qunut

It is recommended to raise one’s hands up to the level of face; the palms of the hands should be open toward the sky; the two hands should be kept together; the fingers should be close together except the thumbs.

Position of Performing Qunut

Some say that qunut should only be recited before bowing like Imam Abu Hanifah, while others say that it should only be recited after bowing.
