Etiquettes of Taking a Ritual Bath

Question:

What is ghusl (ritual bath)? What are the things that necessitate ritual bath?

Answer:

Purification (taharah) is one of the most important duties for the Muslim. It means cleanliness of the mind, soul, body and clothes. The Muslim should keep his body and clothes clean by washing them regularly. If the Muslim is not in state of taharah (pure), he cannot offer prayer or touch the mushaf (copy of the Qur’an). The Muslim should always stay clean and remain close to those who are pure and clean.

Ghusl is one of the basics of cleanliness in Islam. It is known as washing the whole body with pure water. There are some incidents which obligate taking a ritual bath:

1- Sexual intercourse even without ejaculation,

2- Emission of sperm with lust, from a man or woman,

3- After the period of menstruation,

4- Post-natal bleeding.

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah explains the meaning of ritual bath and how to perform it. Then, he defines janabah (major impurity) as a result of either sexual intercourse (jima`) or sexual discharge even without having sexual relations. Wudu’ (ablution) is required to remove minor impurity such as answering the call of nature, urination, defecation, etc.
