What is the Ruling of Offering Tahiyyat Al-Masjid?

Question:

I could not offer Tahiyat Al-Masjid Prayer (Greeting the Masjid Prayer) because there was not enough time between the adhan (calling of prayer) and the iqamah, what is the ruling of this prayer?

Answer:

In the name of Allah, we praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.

Abu Qatadah narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “If anyone of you enters a Mosque, he should not sit until he prays two rak`ahs“. (Agreed Upon)

Imam An-Nawai said: “The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is preferred to greet the mosque, and it is disliked to sit down without greeting it with no excuse, because of the hadith of Abu Qatadah which clearly states that that is not allowed. (Al-Majmu‘)
