The Benefits of the Daily Prayers

Question:

Could you advise me regarding the benefits of the daily prayers? What is the punishment of delaying prayer?

Answer:

Offering prayer five times a day is vital to attain success in this life and the Hereafter. Offering prayers at their fixed times and complete in their bowings, prostrations, and khushu` (submissiveness to Allah) guarantees forgiveness and high ranks in Paradise. The Almighty Allah says:

Certainly will the believers have succeeded. They who are during their prayer humbly submissive. (Al-Mu’minun 23:1-2)

Prayer purifies both heart and soul and a believer attain spiritual devotion through it. Prayer creates a deep connection with Allah. Through prayer, a Muslim establishes patience, humility and sincerity. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying, “Say, if there were a river at the door of one of you in which he takes a bath five times a day, would any soiling remain on him?” They replied, “No soiling would left on him.” He (peace be upon him) said, “That is the five (obligatory) salat (prayers). Allah obliterates all sins as a result of performing them.” (Agreed Upon)

Responding to this Question, Dr. Muhammad Salah mentions the following hadith to reflect on just one of the great benefits of prayer:

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The five daily (prescribed) prayers, and Friday (prayer) to the next Friday (prayer), and the fasting of Ramadan to the next Ramadan, is expiation of the sins committed in between them, so long as major sins are avoided.” (Muslim)

Regarding delaying prayers and not offering them at their proper fixed times,

Almighty Allah says:

Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times. (An-Nisaa’ 4:103)
