Specific Prayer Between Maghrib and `Isha
Question:
Is there a specific prayer that has a certain number of rak`ahs that could be offered between Maghrib (Sunset) Prayer and `Isha’ (Night) Prayer?
Answer:
There are some hadiths narrated in the Sunnah indicating that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers during the time between Maghrib and `Isha’. Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and prayed Maghrib with him. When he had finished the prayer, he stood and prayed, and he kept praying until he prayed ‘Isha’.” (Authenticated by Al-Albani)
It is clear that such voluntary prayer has many virtues and rewards. However, no authentic hadith has been narrated about praying it as six rak`ahs. Imam Ibn Al-`Iraqi said, “Such prayer used to be offered by `Abdullah ibn Mas`ud, `Abdullah ibn `Umar, Salman Al-farsi, Ibn Malik, Al-Aswad ibn Yazid, Sa`id ibn Jubair, Ibn Abi Maleekah, etc.”
Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah sates that it is recommended to pray as many rak`ahs as one wishes between Maghrib and `Isha’. It is better to offer it two by two.
