Accompanying Children to the Masjid

Question:

Is it permissible to accompany my children to the masjid?

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.

There are many authentic Prophetic traditions which show that there is nothing in bringing children to the mosque. It was a common practice during the period of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Abu Qatadah Al-Harith ibn Rib’i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “I stand up to lead Prayer with the intention of prolonging it. Then I hear the crying of an infant and I shorten the Prayer lest I should make it burdensome for his mother”. (Al-Bukhari)

In another hadith, Abu Qatadah Al-Ansari narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was praying and he was carrying Umamah the daughters of Zainab, the daughter of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and she was the daughter of `As ibn Rabi`ah ibn `Abd Shams. When he prostrated, he put her down and when he stood, he carried her (on his neck).” (Al-Bukhari)
